Many people already got used to having an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Large_language_model\">LLM (Large Language Model)<\/a> at hand, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, and use it to find answers to everyday questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But these kinds of AI can get things totally wrong.<\/strong> In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heise.de\/en\/background\/AI-and-Hallucinations-Why-Are-So-Many-Answers-Wrong-10962724.html\">recent (2025) study<\/a>, 45 % of answers given by Copilot, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini contained at least one error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, I was contacted by a South African woman. She knows some German and had deciphered most of an old certificate written in German Kurrent\u00a0script, but there was one thing she couldn\u2019t read: the religious denomination of the people involved. A clear thing to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She sent me the word for translation because AI had &#8216;read&#8217; it as Israelitischer and had moreover, argued &#8211; very convincingly &#8211; that the human translations she had obtained were incorrect. It asserted that such experts had no knowledge of the cultural and historical context of the time (1901) and had therefore made an error. It also presented its analysis of &#8216;Lutherischer&#8217; versus &#8216;Israelitischer&#8217; in a side-by-side comparison for added emphasis. She questioned it, argued with it and uploaded two versions of the certificate with the word in question to ensure that it had &#8216;read&#8217; the word correctly, and AI was unequivocal\u00a0 &#8211; the humans were at fault.<br><style type=\"text\/css\">p { line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0.25cm; background: transparent }&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br>But these kinds of AI can get things totally wrong. The word is NOT &quot;evangelischer&quot; (Lutheran\/Protestant): It does not start with the Kurrent 'E' or 'e', and the sequence of letters is incompatible. The word is NOT &quot;katholischer&quot; (Catholic): It is too long and does not start with the Kurrent 'K' or 'k'. This could have been avoided had AI not made the error, and worse still, convinced her that the humans were wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did this happen?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This example illustrates perfectly <strong>how Large Language Models (like Gemini) can be problematic:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the reasoning sounds fine at first glance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in parts, its arguments are correct \u2013 but the conclusion is still wrong<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the AI acts fully convinced (\u201cwithout a doubt\u201d) and gives the impression of being an expert on the topic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Gemini correctly analysed that the word in question neither starts with an \u2018e\u2019 nor with a \u2018k\u2019. However, it falsely claimed that there are only three possible religious denominations that could appear on an old German document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(If you\u2019re interested, here\u2019s a short list of words for religious denominations that I have come across over time \u2013 it may still be incomplete: <em>katholisch, evangelisch, lutherisch, protestantisch, mennonitisch, anglikanisch, israelitisch, j\u00fcdisch, mosaisch, <\/em>and, of course,<em> ohne \u2013 <\/em>meaning \u201cwithout\u201d.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, it\u2019s not a precise method to only read the first letter of a word and then try to find the correct word by excluding others. But <strong>these kinds of AI are not actually intelligent<\/strong> \u2013 they are <em>Large Language Models<\/em> after all. So what they do best is to summarize huge amounts of information on any given topic, while <em>acting<\/em> like a human and <em>pretending<\/em> they are able to draw sound conclusions from this information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LLMs are definitely unsuitable to <strong>translate\u00a0German Kurrent script<\/strong>.
